Need help with a Nikon D40 digital camera and a wide angle?

I have a Nikon D40 digital camera and lens I buy a large angle. I do not know much about photography, I had to use this type of work the camera. My picture is supposed to provide for wide angle (24 mm). Is there a way to resolve this with my camera menu? Help! Thank you.

Do not use the zoom lens ring. There will be a factor of culture is at stake in 24 will as a goal of 36mm.
