Filter Cap

How can I push the clips back in the cap of the engine air filter?
My car is a corolla 04. the only thing keeping the cork filter air into the engine instead of two clips. I turned away, lifted the lid, and replaced the filter. Now I can not connect the clip back into the fold. It's really hard to push the clip back. Besides the obvious (air filter out of position), what could be doing wrong? TIA.
